  • Pritchard appointed to volcano early warning advisory committee

    Matt Pritchard, professor (EAS), was appointed to a three-year term on National Volcano Early Warning System Advisory Committee. The NVEWS is a national-scale plan to ensure that volcanoes are monitored at levels commensurate to their threats. The plan was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Volcano Hazards Program and its affiliated partners in state and academic institutions.

  • Moridi awarded Young Innovator Award

    Atieh Moridi, assistant professor (MAE), has been awarded the 2025 Young Innovator in the Materials Science of Additive Manufacturing Award from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. The award recognizes “an outstanding, early career individual who is performing innovative research in the area of the materials science of additive manufacturing.”

  • Falco wins best paper award

    September 9, 2024

    Gregory Falco, assistant professor (MAE, Systems), has won the North American Actuarial Journal Best Paper Award for 2023. Falco and his co-authors won for their paper titled “The Economic Impact of Extreme Cyber Risk Scenarios.”

  • Mahowald honored by AMS with climate research award

    Natalie Mahowald, the Irving Porter Church Professor (EAS), has received the Syukuro Manabe Climate Research Award by American Meteorological Society. The Syukuro Manabe Award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the fundamental understanding of Earth’s climate system.

  • Wang receives Gold Medal Award

    September 3, 2024

    Yi Wang, professor (BME), received the 2024 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine Gold Medal Award. Wang received the ISMRM’s highest honor “for his pioneering contributions to the initial development of Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping and its many important applications, especially in the field of neurodegeneration.”

  • Karl Lewis named a Dempster Rising Star

    Karl Lewis, assistant professor (BME), has been named an International Society of Bone Morphometry Dempster Rising Star. The Patricia and David Dempster Rising Star Award for Excellence in Bone Metabolism Research honors exceptional emerging leaders in bone morphometry.

    Lillian Lee, the Charles Roy Davis Professor (CS), received a 25-year test of time award from the Association for Computational Linguistics for her paper, “Measures of Distributional Similarity.”

    Fengqi You, the Roxanne E. and Michael J. Zak Professor of Energy Systems Engineering (CBE, Systems), had his study “A Versatile Deep Learning Pipeline for Transferable Chemical Data Extraction” featured on the cover of the Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling.

  • ELI’s Evans named a Fulbright Specialist

    Celia Evans, associate director for Engineering Learning Initiatives, has been selected to be a Fulbright Specialist. For the next three years, Evans can be matched with institutions in other countries seeking support in discussing, setting up, designing or assessing evidence-supported peer education or training – particularly in engineering and STEM education – as they write a Fulbright grant proposal around these and related topics.
