Biography

David Ryglicki (B.S. ’05) is currently a Principal Scientist at The Demex Group, a Managing General Agent (MGA) that specializes in reinsurance solutions for secondary weather perils such as thunderstorm winds, tornadoes, and hail. His role is to identify relevant and cutting-edge artificial intelligence/machine learning applications and apply them to the needs of Demex’s customers. His current focus is on applying probabilistic and uncertainty quantification methods to Demex’s offerings. Prior to joining Demex, David was the Director of Meteorological Research and Principal Scientist at MyRadar, where he served as the lead or co-lead on several SBIR proposals that applied state-of-the-art AI/ML methodologies to the problems of nowcasting and satellite remote sensing. In addition to his product- and research-focused development at MyRadar, he also performed live coverage of tropical cyclone landfalls and starred in various award-winning educational and outreach videos such as how to interpret satellite imagery and why tropical cyclones have odd-shaped eyes.

Before joining the private sector, David had spent over 10 years working for the federal government including stints at the Technology and Science Branch at the National Hurricane Center, the Naval Research Laboratory Marine Meteorology Division, and Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center. His diverse background also includes cutting edge tropical cyclone research (and discovering a phenomenon that now bears his name), numerical weather prediction model development, forecasting and participation in field campaigns, ensemble product generation, and outreach.

He received his M.S. (’07) and Ph.D. (’11) from Florida State University. He is a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan, and in his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Sarah, his son Alex, and his far too many bass guitars.
