Biography

Tetsuhiro is an Assistant Professor in the Robert F. Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and a Nancy E. and Peter C. Meinig Family Investigator in the Life Sciences. He completed a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. His research focuses on engineering living materials that integrate microbial synthetic biology with materials design. Tetsuhiro was recognized as one of STAT’s Wunderkinds and named to MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35.

Research Interests

Our group develops engineered living materials, systems that combine the programmability of living cells with the versatility of engineered materials. We use synthetic biology to genetically program microbes to sense their environment and respond on demand, and we integrate them with materials to control their physical and biochemical properties. Our applications ranges from intelligent living medicines that treat disease on-site to responsive materials for biotechnology, the environment, and beyond.
